-XR-/43 A Scrollbar-based Visualization for Document Navigation

چکیده

We are interested in questions of improving user control in bestmatch text-retrieval systems, specifically questions as to whether simple visualizations that nonetheless go beyond the minimal ones generally available can significantly help users. Recently, we have been investigating ways to help users decide—given a set of documents retrieved by a query—which documents and passages are worth closer examination. We built a document viewer incorporating a visualization centered around a novel content-displaying scrollbar and color term highlighting, and studied whether the visualization is helpful to non-expert searchers. Participants' reaction to the visualization was very positive, while the objective results were inconclusive.

An empirical characterisation of electronic document navigation

To establish an empirical foundation for analysis and redesign of document navigation tools, we implemented a system that logs all user actions within Microsoft Word and Adobe Reader. We then conducted a four month longitudinal study of fourteen users’ document navigation activities. The study found that approximately half of all documents manipulated are reopenings of previously used documents...

Understanding and improving navigation within electronic documents

Electronic documents form an integral part of the modern computer age— virtually all personal computers have the ability to create, store and display their content. A connection to the Internet provides users with an almost endless source of documents, be they web-pages, word-processor files or emails. However, the entire contents of an electronic document are often too large to be usefully pre...

Beyond the Scrollbar: An Evolution and Evaluation of Alternative Navigation Techniques

Scrollbars provide a simple way to traverse an information space, but they provide little data about the actual contents of the space. Of the many visualization techniques that have been proposed, few have maintained the simple functionality of the scrollbar while showing improved performance on typical scrollbar tasks. This paper presents two enhancements to the scrollbar, a mural bar and a pi...

Overview Scrollbar: A Scrollbar Showing an Entire Document as an Overview

A scrollbar is the most basic function of a graphical user interface. It is usually displayed on one side of an application window when a displayed document is larger than the window. However, the scrollbar is mostly presented as a simple bar without much information, and there is still plenty of room for improvement. In this paper, we propose an overview scrollbar that displays an overview of ...

Beyond the Scrollbar: An Evolution and Evaluation of Alternative List Navigation Techniques

List navigation devices such as scrollbars provide a simple way to browse and find items in a list, but they typically do not communicate information about individual list entries. This paper presents two alternative devices, a mural bar and a pile bar, which encode information about each entry into the trough of the bar. Results from an experiment suggest that these new devices lead to improve...
